Using Readyboost with Vista to increase Ram..| geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 11:32 am | #1 | | Using Readyboost with Vista to increase Ram.. Just trying this option now, using my 1 gig Cruizer USB key..seems to have helped with faster response opening programs etc.. have Vista Premium, 1 gig ram ( 2 with the USB key)..question is is it safe to leave this as a permanent option? If so I'll leave the key permanently plugged in. Saves having to open the case, and cheaper...gonna do a shutdown now to see if that helps, bloody thing takes about 4 minutes to shutdown normally. |

| | geek_knight2216 | March 9, 2008, 11:34 am | #2 | | Yes it is safe to leave long term | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 11:39 am | #3 | | Well that shutdown was 1 min 40 I hope it was the extra ram that helped? Comp is updated, all anti virus etc updated...now the question is since USB memory keys are so cheap nowadays, should I buy a 2 gig, so that gives me 3 gig of ram...or is Vista happy with 2 gig total?... | | geek_kevin16 | March 9, 2008, 11:47 am | #4 | | You should,... bite the bullet and buy some 'proper' ram, cheap options are rarely a good long term solution,.. | | geek_deodar | March 9, 2008, 11:55 am | #5 | | Fast Defrag & Lomsel Shutdown. No harm. | | geek_spyware | March 9, 2008, 11:55 am | #6 | | Maybe you could enlighten us 'thick' people as to how you get Vista to use the memory stick as random access memory. | | geek_deodar | March 9, 2008, 11:58 am | #7 | | Can you read sign language? . | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 12:00 pm | #8 | | Re no. 6 I am one of the thick people..lol..was just googling this morning about benefits/downsides to increasing Ram on Vista..and found ReadyBoost write ups. Basically stick your memory stick in, right click it, properties and see if readyboost is there, if so, enable...made a difference with mine, but as Kevin says above perhaps I should just buy a proper stick of ram instead.... | | geek_deodar | March 9, 2008, 12:23 pm | #9 | I agree with some of that ambo. But a memory stick is a storage device, not extra memory at all. There is no such thing as RAM on a stick, only iceblocks. It is making no difference to your computers memory, but is handy storage for files, like an extra drive, which is why it shows up.Believe It Or Not. | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 12:25 pm | #10 | | Oh well.... thought I was on to a winner there...I'll buy a stick instead.. | | geek_deodar | March 9, 2008, 1:04 pm | #11 | Well you were right,it is a feature but more RAM Would be better. It will work a little but it's a Virtual Memory Cache,or paging file. Not as fast as the Hard Drive or RAM,but if 'shortage of VM' messages popped up then it would work although increasing Virtual is just as good.Only Vista has this & not all sticks are supported.I might try it myself just to see whats what.Congrat yourself for finding it,not many know about it,&thanks for the new input. | | geek_evoeater | March 9, 2008, 1:20 pm | #12 | | It's a good idea likewise with ReadyDrive however I don't think hybrid drives are available yet. If you've plenty of RAM already then you may not need it but if you've only got 1GB or god forbid 512MB then it may come in handy. | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 1:27 pm | #13 | | Yep I've got 1gig which I understand to be minimum really, 512 is a waste of time with Vista..so 2 gig must be much better? I started up my old XP comp uesterday with 370meg or so ram and 1.7Ghz and it was soooo much faster than Vista... | | geek__sexylady_ | March 9, 2008, 1:57 pm | #14 | | What flavour of RAM does your comptuer take, i am guessing it is DDR2 but which speed as 1GB sticks start at as little as $23.00 and go up to $35.00 for mid range memory. | | geek__sexylady_ | March 9, 2008, 2:00 pm | #15 | | Oh and also only SOME memory sticks are ReadyBoost compatible, not all of them can be used in this way, memory sticks can also ???heat up??? when being used consistently, so in the long run paying a few dollars for proper RAM is faster, more reliable, then you can use your memory stick for its first and for most intended purpose data storage. | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 2:10 pm | #16 | | Ok sexylady my ram is DDR2 240 pin....some Transcend ram on here for $30 something, will maybe get one of those, I currently have 2x512mb..is 2gig total plenty for Vista, like is 3 gig overkill? Thanks.. | | geek_dino7 | March 9, 2008, 2:15 pm | #17 | | 2 gig is plenty for joe bloggs on vista - unless you have some apps that chew the RAM 2 gigs will be fine. | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 2:17 pm | #18 | | Actually is this the correct ram for my comp? auction number 144065655 and 144340080 seem the same? My motherboard is an ASUSTEK computer inc Leonite2 6.00, and comp is an HP A6140A...cheers for your help...:-) | | geek__sexylady_ | March 9, 2008, 3:00 pm | #19 | | OK it seems that the HP Pavilion a6140a has 4 memory slots, and takes DDR2-667MHz (PC25300) it can take a max of 4GB (1GB in each memory slot)Either of the auction numbers you posted would work. | | geek_deodar | March 9, 2008, 4:57 pm | #20 | The speed varies, you have to have right stuff It is written on the stick or even on the case.Mines PC 133& 5600? | | geek_ambo11 | March 9, 2008, 5:11 pm | #21 | | Cheers guys, will pull out a stick and write down details before I get the new one..:-) | | Leave your comment: | |
