Web Hosting

I would like to set up an internet website for my small business.Do I need to run the website through a hosting company, and if so, what is that best one?

Thanks!!!

.php or .net or .jsp or just a normal .html of your web pages?

geek_bidtolast, Oct 27, 2:07 pm

lets go with normal.I'm new at this, so type slowly.:)

Realistically yes you need a hosting company. What bidtolose is asking (as well as being a smartypants) is what kind of server side facilities you require.I suspect you have no idea so it would pay for you to provide more information about the sort of website you want and how you want to develop it.

If you are asking this question, realistically, this is your answer...

Pick up yellow pages.Look up web developers.

I would like to have a website to display my wares (photos, prices etc) , and provide information about upcoming shows/displays.I would like an online enquiry form and a linked email address.
I don't know if I should/could create the design etc myself, but I need to be able to change the photos.
Basic, I think!

then find a host that supports wordpress.

OK so what you're after is what would commonly be referred to as a "brochure" website.Easy as, any web hosting service will do this for you.+1 for wordpress for your requirements.

A little expensive IMO.

geek_radiowaves, Oct 27, 2:39 pm

you don't have to stick to NZ hosting.

geek_lostdude, Oct 27, 2:41 pm

http://webhostingnz.com/
$71.40 a month?But I don't like their webpage, it's shabby.

geek_kathii, Oct 27, 2:42 pm

Really? That's good to know. But now I have 1000's to pick from!!!

Talk to some web developers about your needs and wants and see what the costs will be.

You can get a website which allows you to upload and create new products but does the layout for you so you don't need to worry about keeping it looking tidy and consistent.

Costs vary and while you can do it yourself you need to think about:

a) how much your time is worth and how much of your time you really want to put into building the website rather than your business or your freetime.

b) are you technically minded enough to produce a quality website - in the same way slap together displays put customers off in the real world, slap together websites put customers off in the virtual world.

hi kathii,
d.laidlaw giving you some very good suggestions.

I don't know how's your programming skill at this stage. If you still keen of creating a website by yourself, there are some free software out there for you to just drag and drop, and it automatic generating web page for you http://softseeders.com/tag/whatyouseeiswhatyouget/ Slingshot giving 50mb away free host space to clients...You might check it again with your internet service provider. I am using this host, and it look cheap to me http://webhostingworld.net/

Just don't buy the cheapest web hosting, as the quality, speed and reliability of the servers differ a lot, as does the support. The cheapest ones will only provide the most basic support, and for hosting issues only.

OP you may also want to take a look at google sites.sites.google.com

geek_radiowaves, Oct 27, 4:28 pm

go with hostgator starting at $4.95US month and move up to the next size if you need it
