AVG slowing down my computer

geek_nettie05May 27, 2008, 8:48 pm#1
AVG slowing down my computer, Help When I turn on our computer it is always very slow, so I CTRL+ALT+DEL and close off AVG and the computer comes right. I'm guessing its doing a start up test, but it takes forever and i cant find anywhere in AVG settings to stop it doing this. It does it on my mothers pc and grandmothers pc, but they are not to savy with comps so the can close it off, and the computer just lags really bad. Is there a way in AVG to stop this ? Does this happen to you?

No problems here What is your specs, and did you read as you were installing, or just next next next ??
geek_cybernut8811May 27, 2008, 8:53 pm#4
AVG urrghhhh Get rid of it and get a less resource hungry anti-virus program like avast.
geek_yjevaMay 27, 2008, 8:56 pm#5
I can't use it either - I had to change to Avast which runs well.
geek_pixmaMay 27, 2008, 9:14 pm#6
Swiveland you still like AVG even after there have been hundreds of threads where AVG was the problem ? Lets start a poll...
geek_swivelMay 27, 2008, 9:21 pm#7
Pixma Yes I do. I not only use it (with No problems, Like so-many others). Th Problems with AVG is that it's more than just a Virus Program. and comparing it to Version 7 is Stupid. Most users just click next next etc without reading (shows they are PEBKAC's). My old Toshiba Satellite A50 from pressing the start button is up and running in 1 minute, And thats booting AVG, Zone Alarm and Vista. So it's not the likes of AVG that slows PC's down. But if you feel AVG is slowing down your PC, Go to Filehipo.com and get another one (OH AVG is the most Popular). Or get AVG8.1 which is less of a hog. Or read and tune it.

I probably just next next nexted it, lol yea i might just try another anti virus, avg has annoyed me, lol

If AVG is running a scan at boot up you need to disable it in 'scheduler' which is set to scan daily by default.Open AVG Control centre-select 'scheduler'. At the bottom click on 'scheduled tasks'button, under the heading "Name" click on to highlight 'Test plan in basic mode'then click on'edit schedule'button at bottom, then untick'periodically start scheduled antivirus test, click ok,then close, then exit control centre.

Swivel you must admit, for the average user AVG when they follow the upgrade instructions from AVG themselves, will slow down the PC compared to 7.5
. Most users will not know how to tweak the app to get the best performance, so upgrading from 7.5 to 8 is a shock to most. AVG and Avast both do an excellent job, but I think AVG dropped the ball a bit with this recode.

It amazes me that some people are very quick to blame the software thru ignorance, AVG 8 is excelant, one has to only set it up propely. I'v set ours to scan once weekly, takes 1 -2 hrs.
geek_snuzalMay 28, 2008, 7:13 am#12
Change the schedule timing..i have mine scanning daily, runs while I am at work so doesn't slow it down while I work on it, usually only takes 40-50mins too
geek_paddarickoMay 28, 2008, 8:08 am#13
Imo, you dont need avg, avast, etc etc. I just use http://www.threatfire.com/ and had no problems. It caught a keylogger yesterday. Nuked it immediately.
geek_swivelMay 28, 2008, 8:27 am#14
Paddaricko Tested it here on a system I knew had Viruses. It went nuts and cleaned the system, But then installed AVG8 and found 7 more.
geek_swivelMay 28, 2008, 8:32 am#15
Madazu Your correct, and as AVG8 has more than just a Virus prog, So it may slow some systems down (So the user says) AVG has had feedback about this and have put out AVG8.1 out on trial. But for me, I have yet to see AVG8 slowing down a system
geek_paddarickoMay 28, 2008, 9:16 am#16
Oh true Swivel Think I'll give antivir a try, this time around. I was experiencing the same problems everyone else has mentioned in recent threads, so gave AVG the boot.
geek_carnage3May 28, 2008, 9:17 am#17
NOD32 the way to go
geek_mmw10May 28, 2008, 11:45 am#18
Had avg 7.5 for about 6 mnths, set it to scan when not using the comp and no probs, just thought id give nod32 a go after hearing a lot of good f/b about it and been on it for about a mnth now and dont even know its there, very good program but it does cost.

Avoid the free version of an AVG, it has horrible virus detection capabilities.

I have 3 clients running AVG 9 free edition on Vista all complaining of slow PC? Tried updating to the latest release of AVG still accessing the hard disk repeatedly hogging CPU? Have given up for now and uninstalled using Avira as a stop gap.
