Building a server/backup pc

I have been given an old windows 98 machine and want to turn it into a server or backup storage.

I cant remember what cpu it has but its got 62mb ram and a 20gb hdd

Are there any free o/s's which i could use?

Puppy Linux. DSL (Damn Small Linux). There will be others...

You'd be way better off buying a cheap 500GB external drive, way more space, reliability and lower power draw.

What kind of LAN events do you want to host on it?

If you are just planing to use it for storage then freeNAS is good, Stick in a big harddrive install freeNAS and enjoy, www.freenas.org

Just small 4-5 person events using mainly older games and a few new ones
