The 4 port modem/routers & wireless units make good cheap network switchs

good cheap network switches make good cheap network switches. Last 8-port I paid for was $5. Most of the other switches I have around here were free. Not sure why you'd want the extra baggage of using an old router.

Cheaper then your $5 & can still be used as a temp router/moden when your own unit gets fried.
I use a spare wireless D-Link modem in the Tardis for when I need a wireless connection during testing hardware etc, other then that it runs as my network switch

I guess if you have nothing else handy. I've usually got spare 8port and 16 port switches though.
