New Video Card - Need an excuse to buy.

My current video cards works well, but is fairly dated (ATI HD5770) and I would like to replace it with a higher spec version (ATI HD7850).I have no real performance issues with the old card, I just haven't upgraded anything on this PC for a while.I need an excuse. Is there going to be a noticeable improvement! or will my processor (an i5 750) create a choke point before the additional power of the video card kicks in!

Nvidia are better bang for bucks currently aren't they !

geek_black-heart, Nov 1, 11:57 am

Excuse! If you game, then it isn't an excuse, it's a necessity. Gaming hardware lasts 5 minutes, hell yes, you'd notice a difference, the graphics card is the single most important component in a gaming PC.

I take it you don't have a wife!I need a semi plausible excuse.

It can double as a heater in the winter! It helps her to look even sexier!

geek_willfam, Nov 1, 4:39 pm

No, that's what the beer is for.

geek_babcorp, Nov 1, 6:14 pm

what games do you plan to play and at what resolution!

geek_schizoid, Nov 1, 11:58 pm

Tell her it will improve your sex drive because you will be able to watch people get blown up at a much higher resolution and smoother frame-rate.

IMO: Baffle her with bullsh!t (but factual bs ofc)
The 5570 has basically 1/5 of the memory thruput of the 7850 (which is the same card my other half has his eye on btw) and while it might be a half decent card. its a dog compared to the 7850. Your framerates must be crud (depending on what you play ofc) :P
Ideas:
spend a couple of days randomly swearing and sweating while gaming,
pull the PC apart a couple of times,
spend a bit of time on geek forums (TomsHardware, MajorGeeks, GPUreview.com)
swear some more,
drop comments about the card overheating and potentially causing major damage to other components,
comment that the 'damn things ganna fry soon',
insert more cuss words,
uninstall your current driver and install a legacy version, OR
remove a file or two from the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder - anything with ATI on it,
save those files to another folder somewhere so you can drop them back in the Drivers folder if needed,
check to see if the files you removed screw up your GPU,
if they dont then keep removing files until something messes up your graphics (worry not, as you can drop the files back into the Driver folder no permanent damage can be done unless you forget what folder you were storing them in LOL)
once you get it so your GPU decides to go on strike show Wifey,
hopefully she can witness some 'badness' with her own eyes,
start looking for a new card,
get excited over the 7850,
goto http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php!card1=624&card2=678 get even more excited when you look at the stats, show Wifey this too, explain how by using a more modern card that won't be overheating you are actually prolonging the overall life of your PC by keeping ambient temperatures down, ie $$now vs $$$$later,
find a 7850 on pbtech.com or computerlounge or wherever you like to buy your bits from,
show her this: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php!z=p&p=VGASAP7851&name=Sapphire-HD7850-GHZ-EDITION-2G-GDDR5-PCI-E-3.0-Vid
and this: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php!z=p&p=VGAAS61100&name=Asus-HD-7950-DirectCU-II-TOP-3GB-DDR5-PCI-E-3.0-Vi and finally this: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php!z=p&p=VGAEVG2667&name=EVGA-GeForce-GTX660-SC-version--2GB-192bit-GDDR5-P
hum and har over them all and then ask HER opinion,
if you are lucky she will be a good sensible Wifey and go for the cheapest,
kiss Wifey, get keys, get into car, drive to wherever and buy the 7850

Pwoblem Solved.

You said yourself, your card is fine and you have no reason to upgrade. So why bother!

geek_oclaf, Nov 3, 6:47 am

'Fine' is a relative term when it comes to graphics and gaming. yes, his card is fine it all he wants to do is play AoE. it's not so fine if he wants to play GW2 on even lowest graphics settings.
This will also depend on the size of the monitor used. A 19in screen on 1280x1024 might be OK at lowest graphics settings with the 5770. Use the same card in a PC with a 24in monitor, native resolution of 1980x1080 and even on the lowest settings you could put it to the fps would drop to an unplayable level.
See. Relative.
