New laptop for mother . help please

Mother is looking at this model at Harvey Norman - HP 15-G205AU Laptop. She's retired, 76 and she will use it for email, her club newsletters, etc.

She spoke to a guy at HN but apparently he just keep saying to her you need this and then that and before you know it, they have her looking at $1,000 + model,

She's distressed and in all honesty, I don't have a clue about these things.

What should we really be looking for? She'll need Office and a CD player. She also has a credit at the store so wants to use it up.

Thanks for any pointers :)

That will be absolutely fine. On a side note, Open Office is free software which does what microsoft office does, but its free.

yuck that will be a slow piece of crap which will last about a year and a day

Wow so helpful and informative.

Thanks! That's good to know :)

They're right though - that would have been a painfully slow system even five years ago and you absolutely shouldn't pay money for one now.

It was somewhat more helpful and informative than your post though.

But faster than a 76 year old by far!

geek_tintop, May 29, 6:20 pm

I'll bet 76 year olds get as annoyed with slow technology as anyone else.

What is this laptop replacing anyway?

geek_vtecintegra, May 29, 6:26 pm

She has an Acer laptop but I don't know the spec's.

It was relatively new when she got it but had belonged to a teacher. It's never really worked well for her and has software on it that she doesn't use / need.

It is very slow though.

That one you posted may not be an improvement.

Would be worthwhile to find out the specs of the old system, its possible it just needs a bit of a cleanup.

We've had numerous people try and clean it up - with no success. So I'll put this one down as a no then and keep looking :)
