Opening a .xlsx File

I have Office 2013 on my desktop computer, using Windows 7. I have been sent a document .xlsx which I cannot open. I've tried the 'open with' by right clicking on the document but none of the programmes, incl. Excel, will open it. Is there a way I am missing? I think the document was sent by someone using an older version of Office, 2003 or 2007. Any help much appreciated.

.xlsx is the usual extension for Office 2013 spreadsheets.
Maybe your installation needs a 'repair'.

Yes, I was sure I have opened it in the past r.g. Could you 'walk me through' a repair, hopefully not too techy?

What error message do you get? Anyway it's most likely a corrupt file - get the sender to send you another copy.

I have done that -will get the document sent again and try again! I didn't even know about 'repairing' an installation. Many thanks for helpful response.

Once again r.g. thanks so much - now works perfectly. And I did try opening a couple of .xlsx files I had stored and they hadn't worked either, but do now as does the re-sent latest ones. Very grateful for the help I get on this m.b
