Replacing a processor- fail

I took out my old AMD and put in a faster one. unfortunately I didn't get it aligned properly and I have bent some prongs. It doesn't matter as it is a 10 year old model so only my pride is wounded.
I couldn't see any markings apart from a triangle on one corner and some random vacant areas. I lined it up as best I could and gave it a push after trying different positions.
.

Yeah ya had to be careful with those old BGA setups.

BTW the corner with the triangle should have lined up with the corresponding symbol on the corner of the socket itself

im straightening them with a pin and credit card.
I see a triangle on the motherboard (I think it is) but there is no guidance?

I broke a pin after the second try.
The old one just fell in and is up and running.

never bent a AMD pin. First time I tried to install a Intel, I bent a couple of motherboard pins. But that was probably attaching the aftermarket cooler. Never again since.

wrong cpu?

geek_intrade, Jun 22, 11:25 am

Some 64x2 CPUs are socket 939, others are socket AM2. They're superficially similar, but not pin-compatible. Here's a list of specific models

thanks for that daikiwi

geek_jh34, Jun 22, 7:19 pm

soooooo. you installed the wrong socket CPU?

geek_schizoid, Jun 23, 2:19 am

Yes. I read this and thought it would be o.k:
Motherboard Specifications, MS-7184 (AmethystM)CPU/Processor :
CPU
???Socket: 939
???Supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 (up to 4800+) and Sempron (up to 3200+) processors

geek_jh34, Jun 23, 6:26 am

Is there a specific cpu you want to use?

I have a lot of them, could look for one.

geek_marte, Jun 23, 7:42 pm

I just wanted something more powerful than a AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3200+ slot: Socket 939 ?

geek_jh34, Jun 25, 8:35 am

weren't they ZIF sockets?
ZIF = Zero Insertion Force.

ie if they don't just drop in, they don't fit

geek_black-heart, Jun 25, 10:15 am

Correct.

geek_lugee, Jun 25, 10:30 am

Supposedly, until some clown starts bending pins and then the fun starts.

geek_namtak, Jun 25, 11:37 pm

if I read right, and the motherboard still works, you could try your luck with this one maybe.
