Laptop - ok to leave on?

I use my laptop about 2hours a day and it just stays on my desk. Any reason why I cant just leave it turned on instead of shutting it down every night?

I just put mine into hibernate mode. A click of the mouse wakes it.

Leave it on to massively shorten it's life.

that sounds like sleep mode

geek_king1, May 27, 9:47 am

No, turn it off

I asked this when I bought mine and was advised to turn it off at night, put it on hibernate for extended periods during the day and put it on sleep for up to an hour. I've had mine 5 years doing this and it still works fine, if not a bit slower.

Leaving it asleep indefinitely is fine. Absolutely no need to hibernate. It uses very little power when sleeping.

I haven't turned my laptop off for 2 year (aside from the occasional restart), it just gets put to sleep.

You said in #5 to turn it off. which is it?

geek_leeran, May 28, 11:17 pm

I believe it was 'not on all day'.
Sleep or shutdown is fine, although it should probably be restarted once a week

I meant turn it off as opposed to leaving it running. Putting it to sleep is fine. Hibernation is pointless - I disable it as it frees up a few gigs of hard drive space.

We have docking station work laptops and if you don't shut them down at least twice / week they get slower and lock up occasionally. These are near new machines as well.
