"No service" on smart phone.

Have a new cheapish smart phone and have transferred my sim card and charged it but it just comes up 'no service'. Why is that?

possibly the phone is locked to a specific provider - do they still do that nowadays?

Maybe two reasons. 1) It is locked to a provider 2) The phone does not work on the frequency. Thus a cheap Vodafone phone is likely to be locked and even if it is unlocked it will not work on Spark's or Skinny's 850Mhz (B5) frequency
