| | geek_icioufa | July 16, 2008, 7:36 am | #2 | | Continue using...start/control panel/system you will see under general how much Ram you have installed times that by 1.5...you will see what it says is recommended in VM then set your page file to that amount in custom size
On Windows XP go start/ Control Panel/System/ Advanced/Performance, Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory FOR Vista it's start/control panel/system/advanced systems settings/advanced/performance settings/advanced/change/.... | | geek_monkey59 | July 16, 2008, 7:52 am | #3 | | .? What are you trying to do exactly? | | geek_icioufa | July 16, 2008, 8:02 am | #4 | | Write up a simple explanation for users when they get the following message " Windows is running out of virtual memory "A how too adjust the virtual memory" ...that we all agree on... | | geek_joopa | July 16, 2008, 4:02 pm | #5 | | There's a good explanation on http://www.petri.co.il/pagefile_optimization.htm
about what's page file is for and how it should be configured | | geek_icioufa | July 18, 2008, 6:07 am | #6 | | thanks for asking cheers but i said simple LOL, trying to explain to someone on here about how to move the page file to another HDD is abit over their heads IMO, especial when they are having to ask about how too increase VM,ccleaner will clean up the HDD & clear the page file, the only other tip i will write up at this stage would be adding more Ram,I thought & obviously i am wrong, By not having others who could voice their opinions on this subject post,You must find Me a bit too much to handle, BTW lucky for me i chose such a fitting user name , so i will do it myself as usual & be damned for helping because it's Free advice... | | geek_icioufa | July 18, 2008, 6:07 am | #7 | | Using fast defrag is excellent tool as well http://www.amsn.ro/ But it's only a temporary solution until you reboot then those same applications loading at startup will reserve a small portion of ram again, so you are really back to square one unless you remove or disable them from starting up when your PC reboots,If you were to install more ram, problem solved in most cases....any more suggestions or am i asking to much from this forum ??? | | geek_icioufa | July 19, 2008, 4:50 pm | #8 | | Bump it up... | | geek_icioufa | July 20, 2008, 8:41 pm | #9 | | Another bump... | | geek_swivel | July 20, 2008, 8:45 pm | #10 | | I'll Bump as well. We need a sticky for this, as it's a problem that comes in droves, and then nothing for a few days. | | geek_dunedin_ree | July 20, 2008, 8:48 pm | #11 | | Instructions look goodbut include a note about extra RAM in there too (but that it's better to clean up before resorting to that). Too many people think they should just buy more RAM when their bloated junky software is slowing their computer. | | geek_chito | July 20, 2008, 8:51 pm | #12 | | Thanks icioufa. I have tidied up my Start Up. | | geek_icioufa | July 20, 2008, 8:53 pm | #13 | | Will do dunedin_ree did mention the Ram further up just trying to find the correct draft, then can post latter on, but just keep bumping for now & cheers swivel ... | | geek_icioufa | July 20, 2008, 8:55 pm | #14 | | Seen we don't have stickies maybe flewy can put it up on his wiki if it's too long 1024 letters per post on TM.will wait & see... | | geek_toymit | July 21, 2008, 1:44 am | #15 | | I have two Hardrives installed on my computerThe boot HDD is split in two with [C]=40GB and [D]=108GB,the other HDD is [F]=80GB.I have 1.5GB RAM and my Virtual Mem is located on my [C] partition. My (initial) size is 2046 MB as is my (Max),is this a recommended value and if not ,what is and which partition should it be on. | | geek_icioufa | July 21, 2008, 5:41 am | #16 | | Good start setting them to same size toymit you could set it to 3000 max & min"what partition should it be on ?" (F) as long as (F)drive is faster or the same(RPM) than your C:\ drive otherwise it defeats the purpose of moving it to a slower drive (RPM)... | | geek_icioufa | July 21, 2008, 5:45 am | #17 | | Damn wasn't ready to post quite yet...lol the maximum you can set your page file too is 4096... | | geek_toymit | July 21, 2008, 1:01 pm | #18 | | Thanks...I forgot to add.. one of my IDE channels isnt working so I bought a PCI card and running the [F] drive off this, would this be a problem? | | geek_toymit | July 21, 2008, 1:08 pm | #19 | | AndI read somewhere you can split the page file on two separate physical hard disks,is this a wise idea? | | geek_icioufa | July 21, 2008, 1:22 pm | #20 | | Re not that i have come across re why you only have 2 hdd & one is partitoned So you dont put it on the partitoned drive which is part of your c:\ hdd, use your F hdd if you are going to move it ... | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 8:16 pm | #21 | | Back too the top again Bump... | | geek_dunedin_ree | July 22, 2008, 8:17 pm | #22 | | You gonna put this on the wiki? after I print the page of course | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 8:36 pm | #25 | | There you go dunedin_ree ... | | geek_nik12 | July 22, 2008, 8:43 pm | #26 | | Ok, I've been lurking sorry :-) Reading all these things about how what you've got running on startup could be slowing you down. When I do the control/alt/delete thing, and the msconfig thing, I seem to have about 50+ things starting on start up. So I wondered, how on earth do I know what the important things are?
Then I found this thread and thought yay! I'll look them all upbut the link says 404 error, page not found *sign* I was so close!
Thanks for letting me learn from you lot by lurking :-) | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 8:51 pm | #27 | | Try this nik12 was editing it again check it out http://tmcmb.wikispaces.com/Virtual+Memory+How+too+increase+it | | geek_nik12 | July 22, 2008, 9:10 pm | #28 | | Yay, yes, thanks :-) so if I find something I feel safe I understand, like adobe photo downloader. If I click uninstall on the cccleanerI'm just uninstalling it from 'starting on start up'? Is that right? | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 9:16 pm | #29 | | NO it's not you will uninstall that application using the uninstaller you want startup... | | geek_nik12 | July 22, 2008, 9:19 pm | #30 | | Ooohhh, looking at screen better disable? that will disable it from starting on startup? | | geek_nik12 | July 22, 2008, 9:23 pm | #31 | | You did want to make sure your explaination was clear enough for dummies :-) | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 9:33 pm | #32 | | Made a few improvements since you 1st seen it i tried to write it up so users that don't understand what they are doing on a PC can follow directions to do it.... | | geek_nik12 | July 22, 2008, 10:01 pm | #33 | | Thanks! It's amazing what one or two sentences can do. It's all clear now :-) | | geek_laj3 | July 23, 2008, 5:15 pm | #34 | | Hey ici if i have 4 gig of ram what size VM so i have it set to? | | geek_laj3 | July 23, 2008, 5:41 pm | #35 | | So if itd 4 gig i times it by 1.5 whaich is 6 gig is that right and what would that be in mb. thx | | geek_icioufa | July 23, 2008, 6:53 pm | #36 | | The maxuim you can set to is 4096 in the VM settings... | | geek_laj3 | July 23, 2008, 7:11 pm | #37 | | Well it says 5371 as the recomended amount . | | geek_icioufa | July 23, 2008, 7:33 pm | #38 | | Well set it to that & see how it goes... | | geek_laj3 | July 23, 2008, 7:44 pm | #39 | | What would happen if i set it higher. thx . | | geek_laj3 | July 23, 2008, 7:49 pm | #40 | | What about if i set it to System manage size will that be a good idear. | | Leave your comment: | |
