Very Slow Start-up

geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:11 am#1
Very Slow Start-up......................Just timed start up and it was 1 min. 44 secs. from pressing start button up to 'enter password' window. After accepting password, it then starts loading(didn't time how long it took) but maybe all-up, could be 3mins. or just under!!!!!!!!! Any comments welcomed, thanks. It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop A100, bought Jan.07, Harvey Norman.
geek_mustang23July 18, 2008, 11:12 am#2
Did it come pre-loaded with Norton Anti-Virus or Norton Internet Security Suite?
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 11:15 am#3
If you go Start- Run - type in msconfig and then click OK look in the startup tab, how many things have ticks in the boxes?
geek_1clickawayJuly 18, 2008, 11:20 am#4
A Few Things That MIGHT Be Happening; Trojan files is my bet: try grabbing the latest antivir (free-av.com) and Spybot Search n Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) Also grab CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) run those and see if that helps :D
geek_gyrogearlooseJuly 18, 2008, 11:27 am#5
Defragment the C:\ drive .
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:28 am#6
Mustang23 Yes, it came with Norton(until it expired) and I now have latest version AVG Free edition.
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:30 am#7
Gyrogearloose Already did defrag.yesterday.
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:30 am#8
I prefer to use ccleaner startups do disable startup items...startups CCleaner/tools/startup can remove applications or disable, which is a good choice then delete if you really wont need them in the future from starting when PC starts-up reducing the amount of time when starting & Ram reserved for these applications/programs using these for online databases to findout what they are type in the name for identification from a online data base http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?submit=&filter=&submit.x=13&submit.y=4
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 11:32 am#9
If u defrage the c drive does it realy make it faster?
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:32 am#10
Here's ccleaner instrutions for those that dont know how to use it...http://tmcmb.wikispaces.com/ccleaner
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 11:32 am#11
I would suggest Ccleaner to disable the startup items as well icioufa, i just thought it was a quicker way to get an idea of how many things they have at start up, if lots then i would have suggested Ccleaner ;) (with your lovely copied instructions of use to follow)
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:35 am#12
Re it places the items back into the correct position, so they dont have to search from where the last time the were placed on you hdd...
geek_mustang23July 18, 2008, 11:37 am#13
Re:6 Did you remove it via the control panel uninstaller, or download the removal tool from their website? The removal tool is the sure-fire way to remove all remnants of norton, whereas the Control Panel uninstaller has caused many problems in the past.
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:38 am#14
Sexylady Done what you said; four boxes are ticked(but all four looks 'faded' in colour. Top circle 'ticked' and reads: normal start-up load all device and services.
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 11:39 am#15
Ok i might do a defrag now. .
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 11:43 am#16
When you are there it seems you were looking in the General tab - you need to click on the Startup tab, and see how many things are ticked in there :) don't untick anything just look/count then close it
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:44 am#17
Anyone can use any off my instructions in posts more than happy, it's for the good of the users. also am happy to change them if there's a better way anyone can pointout...
geek_tessalJuly 18, 2008, 11:46 am#18
Geez i haven't done a defrag since win98se these days you can have a re-install up, all drivers loaded under an hour...how long does a defrag take these days?
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 11:48 am#19
10-15 minutes :) for minebut i try and keep my C drive clean and tidy!!
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 11:49 am#20
I dont know when the last time i did one but its going ot take me over an hour.
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:53 am#21
Some times house keeping takes a while laj3 ,just like running your anti virus/spyware applications ...
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:53 am#22
Re 10 ( icioufa ) There were two 'sites'. TM Computing MB Wiki-XP system 32 boot fault fix & TM Computing MB Wiki Bios Beep codes. And I would also like to advice you lot that I do not understand the tech language you ppl talk about here, so I just try and do my utmost best to follow directions. Thanks.
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 11:56 am#23
Btw safemode is the best option tap f8 on PC startup go into safe mode which just loads the minimum windows applications needed to run ,otherwise you have some applications writing to your hdd when defraging, which makes it considerable longer as it keeps restarting the defrag...
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 11:57 am#24
Same here ottoitis lol i would normaly be playing games but my laptop at fix it shop.
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 11:57 am#25
No 13 ( icioufa ) Removed it through control panel uninstaller, I think. I don't even remember but I haven't seen any Norton icon on desk top if that's any help.
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 11:59 am#26
But i stll wana use the net icioufa .
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 12:03 pm#27
Re go to the site posted in for the download & instructions...re using ccleaner will help cleanup any Norton's left on your PC.. thats the price you pay that or leave it till when your not going to use your pc late at night when in bed etc...
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 12:08 pm#28
do a search like this /start search /all file & folders type in Norton & search then delete whats found then do another on Symantec ...& the run ccleaner again
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 12:10 pm#29
Again have an appointment so will be back might be a couple of hours doing some tutoring on software & installing ram..cheers
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 12:14 pm#30

geek_ringo2July 18, 2008, 12:24 pm#32
Sexylady following your instructions with interest.I have 21 items on start up
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 12:27 pm#33
Re no. 16 (sexylady) This was what I did: Click on start(bottom left hand corner); click 'run'; click 'system ini'; five boxes are ticked, (1) 16 bit app support (2) drives (3) mci (4)drivers32 (5) 386enh) if that's what you mean?
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 12:30 pm#34
Sexylady Or just click on start and I have 22 items. I get all mixed up.
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 12:30 pm#35
I have 31 on start up. re33 do u hace ccleaner becuse u can see it trough that.
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 12:32 pm#36
Ringo thats about 15 or so to many lol basically you should only need things like AntiVirus, AntiSpyware & Firewalls starting up on boot (not much else). Follow Icioufa's instructions for Ccleaner. Ottotis Click Start (bottom left hand corner) Click on Run - in the little box type in "msconfig" (withouth the ") it will open in the General Tab, look to the top right of the box and click on the Startup tabthen count the number of things that are ticked :)
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 12:35 pm#37
Lol My startup tab has 3 tiems ticked only AntiVirus/Spy and firewall & ATI Catalyst (as i run 3 computers through a KVM switch onto dual monitors i need the resolutions loading correctly) if i didn't then that would be gone as well and i would only have 2 things. Machine starts quite nicely :)
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 12:44 pm#38
But how do we know what ones sould be on start up list & what should be off.
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 12:55 pm#39
If it's any help........I still have Internet Explorer(no add ons) on desk-top, even though I haven't used it since I use Firefox(default).
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 1:01 pm#40
Re 36 (sexylady) I think I have 36 items!!!!!!!!!!!! And I don't even know what they are!
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 1:16 pm#41
Lol ottoitis ummmm thats way to many, no wonder the poor we thing is slow to startfollow icioufa's advice and download Ccleaner and run it basically youu nly need your Antivirus, anti spyware and firewalls startingCcleaner allows you to stop the start up items that you don't need.
geek__sexylady_July 18, 2008, 1:19 pm#42
To Quote icioufa’s instructions on useCcleaner http://tinyurl.com/2evrfl save d/l & install then run Ccleaner go into Options/advanced/ and untick the box "Only delete files in temp folder older than 48Hrs" GO back to cleaner & tick or untick each of the application you want cleaned ,I always start by ticking all ,your choice ,be aware that some data jpg etc can be stored in strange places like the temp folder /recycle bin which will be emptied by Ccleaner these folders should be checked by going here 1st start/control panel/Internet options /settings /view files/view objects checking here before ticking on Ccleaner & checking in recycle bin/then analyze /when finished run cleaner/ click-on registry/then scan for issues/fix selected issues/save back ups & delete latter on when all clear /fix all selected issues/OK/close/repeat till none. This is best performed in safe mode Tap f8 on PC start-up http://tinyurl.com/yw4rr NOTE this will do a general Clean outyou will have to get him to do NICE instructions on Cleaning Startup
geek_laj3July 18, 2008, 1:23 pm#43
Thx sexylady thats what i need him to do. .
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 2:06 pm#44
Back again ,i do myself out $$$ lol installed ram & taught a lady how to watermark & upload jpgs....here's how to findout what the programs are, that are loading at startup ...open CCleaner/tools/startup you can delete applications or disable them which is a good choice, then delete if you really dont need them in the future from starting when PC starts up using these for online databases to findout what they are type in the name for identification from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?submit=&filter=&submit.x=13&submit.y=4
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 2:36 pm#45

Re 53 (laj3) What do you mean change start-up? I haven't touched anything yet, thanks.
geek_1clickawayJuly 18, 2008, 7:54 pm#56
Disable From the 'list'; It appears that you DO have trojans; (http://www.simplysup.com/) While this is a TRIAL version and only last 30days: It will 'clean' up those unwanted files: Click START: Click ALL PROGRAMS; Click START UP; And DELETE ALL programs that is there; (saves the booting up time) Run CCleaner too; Also antivir is a great program for viruses (ts free) Spybot will pick up loose files and cookies that are about; A good LEARNING curve is to enter any of the programs that are running (ie when you look at what process is running; either in MSCONFIG or by pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL and clicking on PROCESSES) In Google; (ie if we wanted to know what thokey.exe is; We would find that it http://tinyurl.com/6oqnmd) :)
geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 9:11 pm#57

geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 9:27 pm#65
Re 56 (1clickaway) As I am very limited in understanding the above, I will try, but slowly. I also got these 'services'. 89 of them. 56 are 'running'. 33 are 'stopped'. 73 by Microsoft; 9 are 'unknown'; AVG has 2; Toshiba 1; Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd; Intel Corp. has 4. These are for your information on the services I have on board. ( to the best of my knowledge, anyway)
geek_ottoitisJuly 18, 2008, 9:34 pm#66

geek_icioufaJuly 18, 2008, 9:56 pm#72

Yes you can delete the desktop icon shortcut for Asquared from your desktop....highjackfree ????whats that ????& licences expires in 29 days Please explain where this notice comes from & what it involves??....
geek_icioufaJuly 19, 2008, 2:46 pm#116
From reading your posts did you d/l a-squared Anti-Malware 3.5 ? & Not the 3rd one down which was Asquared Free 3.5...remember to be precise with your description's, makes it very difficult to analyze from here, if i dont know what you're taking about if you misspelled something...
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 3:53 pm#117
Re 116....It was the 3rd one. Download a-squared Free-Free for private use
geek_icioufaJuly 19, 2008, 4:00 pm#118
Re 5 please explain 29 days left why from what/where are you getting this ?,i will help as much as i can as we have visitors at the moment.but will reply to you answers...
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 4:02 pm#119
Re 116There are 2 packs; $39.95, and the Mamutu $29.95. and I got the a-squared Free, I clicked on 'read more' and took me to Clean your PC with a-squared Free, this was d/l
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 4:06 pm#120
And it came with.......Security Status; Scan PC; Quarantine; Background Guard; Configuration; HiJackfree
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 4:16 pm#121
On the page.....................a-squared Downloads, top one is: a-squared Anti-Malware 3.5; middle one is: Mamutu 1.7; and 3rd one, is the one I d/l. I think I might have got the wrong d/l? Shall I uninstall current one and do a d/l on free one?
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 4:23 pm#122
Icioufa..................What do I do to infected files I got in Quarantine? If this is paid version, which I'm starting to think it is, at least I had a play with it.I think it's the way they set-up there pages that mixes me up . I read it too fast or something!
geek_icioufaJuly 19, 2008, 4:36 pm#123
Leave them in Quarantine you can uninstall them anytime, No harm done, i see where hijackfree came from now , use the online scan at trendmicro too ,do it at night as sometimes it takes quite a while depending on the size of your Harddrive's that they scan ...
geek_icioufaJuly 19, 2008, 4:39 pm#124
Trendmicro is posting 6 good luck i will keep an eye on this thread....
geek_otto205July 19, 2008, 4:44 pm#125

Yeah i'm here whats up ???
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 7:57 pm#129
Hi icioufa & laj3..........I was just referring to otto205, thanks. Anyway, if this is the paid version I had installed, I 'have to' uninstall it before installing free one? I saw you can also d/l HiJackFree by itself for free.
geek_laj3July 19, 2008, 8:00 pm#130
What u need it for any way? .
geek_laj3July 19, 2008, 8:04 pm#131
This is the one i think u need to d/l http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ go to the botom of the page and it says download. corect me if im wrong.
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 8:15 pm#132
As I mentioned before...................the one I have says expires in 29 days. So I presume I d/l paid version by myself not reading it properly.
geek_laj3July 19, 2008, 8:23 pm#133
Well i would just wait untill it expires and if i does uninstall it and get the free one.
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 9:06 pm#134
I am now...............scanning with Trend Micro
geek_laj3July 19, 2008, 9:22 pm#135
Well good luck have to go now .
geek_pheonixJuly 19, 2008, 9:29 pm#136
The free version gives you a trial of the paid version for 30days, then reverts to the free version. All that happens is that it no longer stays "live" looking all the time for malware, but you have to manually scan with it. Also you will lose the automatic updates and will have to manually update. Otherwise they are basically the same.
geek_ottoitisJuly 19, 2008, 10:00 pm#137
Thanks pheonix......I'll leave it as it is then. As I said Re134, it was into 2 and three quarter mins. until finish when a window pop on centre of screen with words it has to close 'cause of an error and to report the error. I clicked send report, was shutting down PC, nothing happens, program didn't respond and won't close. I had to pull the plug and restart PC. Box with 'restart session' or 'start new session', I opted 'start new session'. I think I won't use Trend Micro again.
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 10:48 am#138
Con't.........................Had a peek in "System Configuration Utility", System INI--all boxes checked, Win. INI--all boxes checked, Boot INI--none checked. Please advice/comment. Thanks.
geek_pheonixJuly 20, 2008, 11:02 am#139
Advice Stay out of those unless you definitely know what you are doing. They can be dangerous. Just stick to the startup.
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 6:57 pm#140
Icioufa read 134 and advice again.............and just done a speed test. Download: 4230 kb/s; Upload 126kb/s. A 2nd test done few minutes after: 4286kp/s; 135kp/s. ISP Telecom(Auck). I haven't 'touched' Trendmicro since my episode last night.
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 6:59 pm#141
Sorry icioufa read 137(not 134) thanks again.
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 8:29 pm#142
You could have spyware still only way to findout is to keep doing scans, never come across that error or send reports, but then again i don't use i.e either,if you don't want to use trendmicro again ,I would till it finishes the scan & gives you a result with options to repair, you could try a number of others like panda...http://tinyurl.com/33evjg Do you have the XP cd that came with your Pc ? as you might in the end have to do a number of different repairs to fix any corrupt system files...
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 8:38 pm#143
This panda here http://tinyurl.com/4u4o
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 9:37 pm#144
Icioufa look at.......the dates re 142 & 143. Doesn't make sense how 19th july under your 20th july. Anyway, I'll wait until tomorrow then I scan mine again with 'trendmicro', You have been a great help and the others whom are too numerous to list. Thanks again.
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 9:49 pm#145
Re 142 /143 both are dated 20th from here, start your scan tonight before you go to bed thats what i do ,then wake up to the results & choose the repairGood luck post any problems if any, will be around tomorrow for a while will watch this thread for you....
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 9:52 pm#146
BTW have seen that before it's Tm out of sink...refresh you page it will come right...
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 9:56 pm#147
Re 142............The i.e you refer to is Internet Explorer? If so, I use Firefox. As for CD,I couldn't find it(yet). And how do you 'read' http://tinyurl.com/4u40? How do I 'get' 4u40 when I open the above? I never understand these 'paths' anyway.,the likes of: hppt://tinyurl.com/en/software/, it's those after the .com/...............
geek_ottoitisJuly 20, 2008, 9:58 pm#148
The above hppt was meant to be http.
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 10:04 pm#149
Either right click copy & paste or type into Firefox, it's a tinyurl as some url's are to long to post & break up in the posting & wont open when you try posting in you browsers address bar...
geek_icioufaJuly 20, 2008, 10:05 pm#150
Another fiddy longest thread Ive been in yeah....lol
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 9:42 am#151
Icioufa......................Ran trendmicro lastnite, result this morn: 1 affected cookie(profiling cookie). Click on 'clean-up', all done. But, it says this has to be removed manually: 'Buffer overrun in JPEG Processing(GDI+) could allow code Execution(833987)
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 9:48 am#152
Con't from above.............Detected vulnerabilities: Buffer overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+)Could allow code execution(833987)
geek_pheonixJuly 21, 2008, 9:51 am#153
What that is saying is you still have a security hole and need to run Windows update. What they are referring to is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833987
geek_icioufaJuly 21, 2008, 9:53 am#154
Yes thats what i came up with too...
geek_icioufaJuly 21, 2008, 9:59 am#155
Re # 80 thats why i asked if this was the correct spelling "ctfmon"
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 10:35 am#156
That is............correct spelling. Located in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion it says.
geek_icioufaJuly 21, 2008, 10:53 am#157
Ok thats why i asked cause you had a different spelling"ctfman" which could have been spyware ,But thats OK cause "ctfmon" is associated with m$ office...
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 10:56 am#158
According to task manager.......Image name:ctfmon.exe; User(myself); CPU 00; Memory Usage 1416K; if that enlightens the task.
geek_icioufaJuly 21, 2008, 11:02 am#159
Thats ok you now know why ...next lol
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 1:14 pm#160
So far..............'Start up now 60secs; compared with 1min 44secs in my 1st post. 23 items on start. I'll google 'em if I can disable some more. Thanks icioufa and pheonix. I still have this ctfmon to take care of. There are about 8 or more Microsoft/help downloads I have to choose from.
geek_laj3July 21, 2008, 4:45 pm#161
So it seems that ur computer has improved so that is good for u just wondering if u dont mind how much ram does ur computer have ottoitis. thx
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 10:10 pm#162
Re 161(laj3)...........No, I don't mind at all. It only has 512, I know, I had a peek(out of curiosity), and sorry for the late response. I'm still learning though(slowly I might add). cheers.
geek_ottoitisJuly 21, 2008, 10:13 pm#163
Will another...................addition of 512MB improves performance or take it up to 1GB? Any limits to amount of RAM installed? Or...................thanks.
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 12:15 am#164
Icioufa............See if this any good? 'Fee Performance Scan'.............thanks.
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 3:11 am#165
Depending on your motherboard which you would need to find out ask & i can post a link, then google your M/B specifications to see what it will allow you to use up to & accept , under normal circumstances 512mb is ample for everyday use on Xp ,again depending on what you use your PC for...as for your "Free performance scan" never used them myself, but would need a link to comment further.....
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 4:51 am#166
I told a lie, had a think about what i have used closes i get to the above performance scan will also tell you whats missing & what you need to know for motherboard/ram ...http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html also this is brillant for updating out of date software with security issues do the online scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 5:37 am#167
BTW belarc wont tell you the type of ram used or need this one will http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html d/l the standalone which is my choice you can choose the installer if you like, once you open siw you need to look at the memory/then memory type. motherboard will tell you what you were looking for to google for specs on the maximum amount you can install...
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 12:21 pm#168
Re164.............Forget it. No idea where I got it from. 16 items on start-up now(from 33?). 56.8secs. I'll try and follow your 166 & 167.
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 12:33 pm#169
RAM specs...........................512MB 2Rx16 PC2-4200S.444.12; HYMP564S64BP6-C4.AB 0639. Would this help? thanks.
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 12:47 pm#170
Nope it will say something like sdram pc133, pc166 etc or ,ddr, pc2700 pc3200 512mb etc ?
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 12:49 pm#171
What we are trying to find out is if it's sdram or DDR ...
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 1:02 pm#172
Quarantine..................I would like to 'delete' the quarantine infections. Will it affect anything re performance or anything? this is the source: C:\Documents&Settings\Otto\App except one which has Coo instead of App. Behavior/Infection: Trace Tracking Cookie. Risk: Low. Hope the above makes sense! cheers.
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 1:04 pm#173
Re 169From RAM I have in PC.
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 1:07 pm#174
Re 2 go ahead & delete it's only a tracking cookie,9 what application did you use to find out the ram specs?
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 1:09 pm#175
Use this one from post 7 http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 1:15 pm#176
Toshiba Satellite A 100 system unit model PSAA8A-1C003Q Pls. note: zeroes between C & 3 have forward slash in centre. (Don't know how to insert 'em)
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 1:28 pm#177
Going by that info you have 512MB DDR2 533MHz installed...not being rude but because of the past troubles it might pay for a tech to install it for you, better safe than sorry pulling a laptop apart to insert more ram
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 1:41 pm#178
Had a look...................at HTML Log and saw 3 properties? I saw this 'how to....' video about installing RAM etc.. you insert it at about 45 degree angle? and you have to ground/demagnetize yourself? I did open the back of PC and saw 1 slot empty, I even took photos of it. So maximum capacity is 4096MB or?? thanks.
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 1:43 pm#179
I think ......I need a break. It is getting confusing. What makes it worse is I hardly know anything about computers!!!!
geek_icioufaJuly 22, 2008, 1:45 pm#180
4096 is virtual memory not Ram & if you have opened it up & seen where you insert the ram go for it ...
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 4:20 pm#181
This was whatI was referring to about RAM installation: http://videos.howstuffworks.com/howstuffworks/49-how-to-add-ram-to-a-laptop-video.htm
geek_ottoitisJuly 22, 2008, 4:23 pm#182

geek_dillisJuly 22, 2008, 8:01 pm#184
Try defaging the computer to free us the ram
geek_ottoitisJuly 23, 2008, 12:12 am#185
Icioufa..........Done the ccleaner thingy
geek_icioufaJuly 23, 2008, 5:02 am#186
Good one ottoitis you should use ccleaner at least once a week & check your startups unless your installing & uninstalling a lot of programs then you can to it daily if you choose, cleaning up residue left in the registry from the uninstalls, as for the above suggestion defragging will help put your files back in order in you o/s Hdd file system, which will help speed up the launching of an application (nothing to do with Ran),because then it wont have to go searching for the last place it was placed in your file system when used last ....Defrag for the best results do it in safemode ,Tap F8 on pc startup go into safemode from the options offered then defrag....
geek_deodarJuly 23, 2008, 5:27 am#187

Re rams, icioufa.......Memory for my pc: Slots PC4300 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB or 2048MB memory modules can be installed in the two memory slots for a maximum of 4096 system memory. Not sure how many 'pins' though.

I might have to .................uncheck CCleaner 'Run CCleaner when pc starts-up'...............I always have to re-enter sites, say, I entered yesterday.
geek_ottoitisJuly 24, 2008, 4:04 pm#209
Re 206...............The info on 202 from my laptop manual. Have skimmed through it understand only a little bit.
geek_icioufaJuly 24, 2008, 4:25 pm#210
Re# 208 thats OK just click on ccleaner when you want to cleanup & do issues,as for the sites, it empties your cookies & cache thats why, which needs to be done regular ...have another read of your manual about Ram ,If you intend on upgrading...
geek_ottoitisJuly 24, 2008, 8:57 pm#211
CCleaner on Options setting............what does 'Secure file deletion' and 'Normal file deletion' mean? Also what 'circle' shall I check? Thanks.
geek_icioufaJuly 24, 2008, 9:07 pm#212
Ones faster than the other when scanning your choice, unless you have something to hide just choose normal...it's the amount of times it gets over written...
geek_ottoitisJuly 24, 2008, 10:43 pm#213
Seen messages...................re AVG8 free edition. Some have removed it, slowing their pc down etc. I have AVG8 but not sure if slowing mine. If I remove it, will 4 squared 'cover' me until I get another free/best one?
geek_ottoitisJuly 24, 2008, 11:28 pm#214
AVG8 Free edition.......................ever since installation it has 'caught 4 infections: Adware Generic3.EGN and all been moved to Vault. Should AVG detected more or...........? I think installed 30/5/08
geek_icioufaJuly 25, 2008, 4:56 am#215
No Asquared free is just back up for scannng downloaded applications exe zips rar's etc & scanning your PC, any one antivirus/spyware wont fully protect you ,you need another or several to scan with for spyware .If your not happy with AVG8 try another, i like Antivir = http://www.free-av.com/ which i have installed on 1 o/s here...BTW you did trendmicro dont lose that link, do it at least 1 a month for assurance that you o/s is clean...
geek_ottoitisJuly 25, 2008, 11:37 am#216
It isn't that.................I don't like AVG8 Free, as you know I hardly know anything about these. I don't think mine is slow. So, AVG won't 'go against Antivir'? if I download/scan pc? cheers.
geek_drcspyJuly 25, 2008, 11:47 am#217
Dumb idea: '201. I just created a GMail Drive..................... of nearly 7 or more GB"....considering how cheap ACTUAL hard drive storage is these days.....and dvd's are ridiculously cheap.......storing your data on some server located in america or god knows where is STUPID......
geek_icioufaJuly 25, 2008, 12:40 pm#218
216 it is best to uninstall AVG8 before installing another antivirus like the one i suggested,,,LOL "drcspy" huge learning curve going down cant you tell by the length of this thread, but agree with you with the cost of HDD he easily could buy an external for the laptop...i do have several gmail accounts that i use but am particular about what i let google/gmail know about my correspondence...lol
geek_ottoitisJuly 25, 2008, 6:57 pm#219
Re 217........................the whole intention of that GMail Drive was to test my very very 'limited' knowledge of the electronic age. You see, I followed instructions read on line and I archived it first go. As you can see from 218,I am still learning, and, a long way too. I do thank icioufa for his time being spent on tutoring me. Cheers. And I hope the storm of tomorrow won't eventuate into what they are predicting!!!
geek_ottoitisJuly 25, 2008, 7:00 pm#220
Oops....Suppose to spell achieved.
geek_laj3July 25, 2008, 7:00 pm#221

Icioufa, I've finished.................installing/scan Avira free. and also PC Tools antivirus. Saw downloads between AVG Free(2,195,796) & Avira Free(445,488). (AVG was uninstalled)
geek_icioufaJuly 25, 2008, 10:52 pm#223
You don't have two antivirus's installed at the same time the can conflict ,one or other not both...
geek_ottoitisJuly 26, 2008, 10:57 am#224
This was what.................I was concerned about. First of all, start up now: 44secs. But, opening Firefox icon desk-top: 41.4secs. Speed seems alright. Now, do I uninstall PC Tools antivirus, or just keep an eye on it for the time being? thanks.
geek_ottoitisJuly 26, 2008, 11:11 am#225
Read message..................about leaving wireless modem 'on' all the time? Mine off every time I finish using it for the day/night.
geek_ottoitisJuly 26, 2008, 11:25 am#226
Icioufa..........My e-mails were checked by PC Tools when I checked inbox.
