Sticky suggestion - What you may be asked?

Totally agree. Sticky it!

I really think Q6 is irrelevant and not needed for several reasons.

- some people don't trust themselves on google.
- yes/no answer actually adds nothing to the information we need about the problem
- for some, the yes answer will have solved the problem and they wouldn't be here asking the Q

The answer is always going to be no for whatever reason, or yes but it didn't help.
and if a google search allows us to find the solution in 10 seconds, it's not that difficult to post a link.

just my 2 cents

3. Describe the problem in detail - steps taken etc

current Question encourages 'doesn't work' and 'won't start' kind of answers

3.5 list any error messages and warnings word for word

christin, Jan 18, 8:36am
pretty much what i said earlier :-)

they will just say "printer broken" and not describe what is wrong - ie not powering up, not printing, unable to install driver etc.

as you say error messages would be good. Symptoms of problem etc.

And i agree re the google thing, maybe just have a suggestion of googling up the top first bere posting here etc. it doesn't help us solve any problems knowing they have already googled, but may stop them having to post in the first place? :-)

Maybe osmething like -same info requested but a bit more specific to help someone not too techy?

1. What problem are you having?
(Please describe any symptoms and error messages in detail)

2. What device is causing problems - please be specific?
(ie Apple Iphone 6, HP Pavillion Laptop, Brother HL3150CDN)

3. What software are you using?
(ie Windows 10, Android, IOS etc)

4. Any other helpful information?
(ie when did the problem occur, steps taking to try and resolve etc)

bit shorter and less scarey than a big list?

1: Make and model of device
2: What version of software (eg Windows 10, Android, Apple Mac etc)
3: What problem are you having?
No, what are the symptoms is better.

4: When did it last work correctly?
(better wording)

5: What steps have you tried already to fix it?
6: Have you tried searching for your problem on Google.com?

Actual real IT help forums, do have these kind of stickies. And stickies for common issues and troubleshooting info.

Or.

"Please before posting any problems in this forum, you may be able to solve the problem by Googling it yourself. Simply type in any issues or error messages that you may have and you may find a solution.

However if this does not help, we are happy to help with any problems you have, but it would be very useful to have the following information:

Thank you."

And:

Be sure to come back sometime - not next week but, y'know, reasonably soonish and check if anyones bothered to spare some of their time and knowledge to attempt to assist. You never know - we might just save you a few headaches and some dollars !

Update - I got a reply from TM saying they thought the sticky suggestion to be a good idea and it would be raised for discussion. Let's see.
