You will find if you give details of what Router you have and the operating system you have ,there will be someone here that can walk you through the setup. Find that if you can do something yourself you will learn from it

Give more details? Are you crazy? Why would anyone give more details on a problem they're having to a forum full of people who are psychics and can read other peoples' e-minds.

I read your mind are really you want to buy something...

Ok, i have got a vodafone modem, plugged into the wall, that works fine, i have then got a ethernet cable from the modem to the router and then one from its ports to my computer. However i cant get onto the internet, the part i dont have a clue about, is joining the computer to the router etc, ie isp numbers and all that?
geek_soodanimJuly 21, 2008, 12:52 pm#8
Okwhat's wireless got to do with it then, with all the mention of cables....WHAT is the make and model number of the router.
geek_madhatter2July 21, 2008, 12:56 pm#9
2 people in the house will connect via ethernet and i will connect via wireless, im just thinking if i can at least get it to connect via ethernet, then i should be able to sus out the wireless part. Unfortunately i dont have the model number on me, as im at work, but i have found some good instructions on the net regarding this, so i will have a good crack at it tonight and report back tomorrow.
geek_spywareJuly 21, 2008, 1:03 pm#10
Terminology ISP: Internet Service Provider, e.g., my ISP is Xtra. IP: Internet Protocol, e.g., IP address.
geek_madhatter2July 22, 2008, 10:38 am#11
Update, i had another crack at it last night and got a bit further, but still couldnt connect to the net, disabled the firewall and it still didnt work, so i rang the guy up who i brought it off and he advised me that i was using the wrong cable between the router and the modem, he mentioned something about a cross over or something, does this sound at all right?? im meeting him soon and hes going to give me the cable anyway.
geek_barmanmykJuly 22, 2008, 12:39 pm#12
That would explain it. there are a couple of different ethernet cables - Crossover and Network. Having the wrong cable between either your router & computer or router & modem will prevent any connection. Have a go with the new cable & let us know how you get on.
geek_madhatter2July 22, 2008, 12:55 pm#13
Cheers i will do, unfortunately i couldnt meet him today as hes home sick, so will meet tomorrow and try tomorrow night. cheers

Ok i have the cable and are now able to talk to the router and connect to the internet via an ethernet and wireless. however when i check the list of computers attached to the router i can see that there are 4, i know of two as they are my flatmates and i assume that another one of them will be mine. Would the 4th one be the router or something?
geek_rhys.mJuly 24, 2008, 7:59 am#15
Does the list of attached devices show the MAC addresses? Most modems/routers should have there MAC address displayed somewhere on them. If not in the router configuration.
geek_madhatter2July 24, 2008, 8:32 am#16
Yeah it does show the mac address will have to have a look at it tonight. could it be that there are one for the modem and one for the router?
geek_madhatter2July 24, 2008, 10:14 am#17
One other question, how do i find the ip address of my laptop??
geek_ross1970July 24, 2008, 10:30 am#18
Open a command prompt window and type "ipconfig /all". Your pc's IP will show along with other info.
geek_ross1970July 24, 2008, 10:34 am#19
And the IP address you'll get from ipconfig is the LAN Ip for your PC, given to it by your router. Your public IP ( the IP given to your router by your ISP )will show if you go into your routers web set up page.
