Go into control panel - administrative tools - services. Find Network Connections and double click - change the startup type to automatic and under status click start. Then exit and reboot your machine. | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 7:07 pm | #22 | | I'm back soodanim Had to stop it to start it again but no luck. Do I have to reset administrative tools, services? Or is it okay left that way - after all I did get back online. | | geek_soodanim | July 22, 2008, 7:11 pm | #23 | | Should be ok OK then, try deleting and redo the connection. | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 22, 2008, 7:12 pm | #24 | | Majsp, try this. I used this to resolve the same prob a while back. 1. Open My Network Places.
2. Click Hide Icons for Networked uPnP Devices at the Tasks panel.
3. For Windows Classic theme users, click Tools and the Folder Options in Windows Explorer, and then select Show Common Tasks in Folders to see the option specified in step 2. | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 22, 2008, 7:15 pm | #25 | | And have a read of this. other fixes in here, http://tinyurl.com/2ekzh3 | | geek_deodar | July 22, 2008, 7:20 pm | #26 | | Throw it out the Windows. Or use task manager. | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 7:38 pm | #27 | | # 23 Will try that shortly thanks for all your help. | | geek_pheonix | July 22, 2008, 7:44 pm | #28 | | Check you have these services running as well. Start - Run and type & enter MSCONFIG. Click on the "Services" tab and ensure the boxes are ticked for...network connections , net logon , network location awareness (NLA) | | geek_icioufa | July 22, 2008, 7:45 pm | #29 | | Try here too it's the menu at the very top of the DialUp Networking window where it says File Edit View, etc.. One of those says "Connections" | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 7:49 pm | #30 | | Just discovered my volume icon is missing too. Anyway am now busy feeding a 3 mth old so will try the rest of your suggestions when she's asleep. Great thanks for all the help. | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 7:52 pm | #31 | | How the hell do you turn up the volume without that icon. Stupid question. Was wanting to listen to music whilst breastfeeding. Can hardly hear it and cant turn it up! | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 7:54 pm | #32 | | Worked it out! | | geek_pheonix | July 22, 2008, 7:55 pm | #33 | | Go into Control Panel and click on Sounds and audio devices. Put a tick in the box "Place Volume icon in taskbar" | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 8:02 pm | #34 | | Pheonix....A very strange thing just happened. When I went to Sounds and audio devicesplace volume icon in taskbar. My internet connect came back! What's strange is that my volume one is still missing. | | geek_pheonix | July 22, 2008, 8:05 pm | #35 | | OOOOOkkkkk that sounds really strange Whats strange about your volume one? | | geek_majsp | July 22, 2008, 8:30 pm | #36 | | Strange indeed pheonix I don't care really about the missing volume icon, being able to disconnect my dial up is much more important. No# 25 friendly_prawn's tinyurl address mentioned Universal Plug and Play devices as being the cause. Today was one of the few days I'd been using my camera for TM sales. So that could very well be it. Many thanks for your help, without it I'd be restarting the computer every time :-) | | geek_majsp | July 24, 2008, 12:03 am | #37 | | Internet and volume icons missing again Got them both back for a while but gone again. Just another XP problem I suppose. Disconnecting dialup by unplugging the phone connection and adjusting volume from control panel. Better than nothing! | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 24, 2008, 12:11 am | #38 | | My guess is, Its a UPnP problem. As I have struck this before and have solved it with the above fix that I posted. Have you tried the other fixes in that link. There are a few ways to sort it, here's another. 1. Open Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. Select Networking Services.
5. Click Details button.
6. Uncheck (remove) the UPnP User Interface.
7. Click OK.
Reboot if needed.Try the other fixes in the above url. There are services that you can stop too. But try fix above first and anything in that link above. If that fails, let us know how you get on. | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 24, 2008, 12:16 am | #39 | | actually its quite funny. I have just had to set up UPnp on my system for a p2p app. Now some of my taskbar icons are missing too such as the sound icon. So its almost definitely a UPnP problem. Too late now, but I will try to find a permanent resolve for it in the morning and post once i find it. Obviously not using UPnP is one resolve, but that can be a pain if you want to use it. Will see what I can come up with in the morn.... | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 24, 2008, 12:23 am | #40 | | Turn off SSDP service! as in above url. After the computer started, not all icons that should be present in the system tray (nowadays also called notification area) of the task bar is showing. Often, one or more icons are missing and disappearing from the task bar notication area. This is known problem, or a bug of Windows XP. It has nothing to do with Hide Inactive Icons that tidy up your notification area. The exact cause for the problem is unknown. According to Microsoft, the problem can be caused by the Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) which discovers Universal Plug and Play devices on your network. | | geek_friendly_prawn | July 24, 2008, 12:34 am | #41 | | Services to turn off, assuming you tried fix above to get in to services, hit windows key +R.. type in services.msc and hit enter. scroll down to Simple Service Discovery Protocol and disable it, then down too universal plug and play device host and disable/stop that as well. then reboot and see if icons come back. There are a couple of other services that you can try as well, but that should do the trick. | | geek_drcspy | July 24, 2008, 5:59 am | #42 | | "Missing internet connection icon in taskbar" no you're not you are missing the icon in the SYSTEM TRAY.......the task bar is the MIDDLE part at the bottom of the screen | | Leave your comment: | |
