Stand alone media player with a library| geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 7:53 pm | #1 | | Stand alone media player with a library Looking at options for a stand alone media player for my computer. Can't stand Itunes & all it's spyware etc plus it's a hungry program that means I can't use someone elses computer to trade music with. Windows media player is simply to hungry & nosy about who & where you get your music from, much like Itunes. Whats my options for a decent media player complete with music library list etc, but 1 that doesn't nag for more info or locks you in to their prg. |

I have no idea what you mean when you say this about iTunes: "I can't use someone elses computer to trade music with" and "locks you in to their prg". iTunes just indexes your existing MP3 files, they're stored right there in your music folder. How does that mean that you can't trade music and how is it locking you in? If you don't want iTunes to copy and organise your music in its own folder, you can turn that option off. | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:06 pm | #3 | | Itunes 7 Locks your Ipod to your computer only. If you try to synce or access it on someone elses computer with itunes, it will tell you that to access the ipod you have to let the prg delete whats already on there first. If you try to access without the Itunes program, then all you will see is encryped with propriety files. | | geek_dunedin_ree | March 14, 2008, 8:09 pm | #4 | | Um... so you're not after a stand-alone media player, you're after an iTunes alternative? Google it, there are a few out there but since I don't use one I can't recommend anything. And I believe there's a setting so that you can (eg) use your iPod on a couple of different computers without deleting everything. As for sharing, I don't give my friends my music. They can buy their own ;) | | geek_0800xford | March 14, 2008, 8:11 pm | #5 | | Qmp ftw http://www.quinnware.com/index.php HIGHLY recommended, been using it for YEARS. check out the forum for help, tips and tricks =) | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:17 pm | #6 | | Dunedin_ree Yes I am after a stand alone media player, as in, it's not locked to a perticuler brand or a copywrite nagger or any other form of NAGGING. All I want is a spyware/nag/copywrite/ hassle free media player that also has play library functions similer to the others but without the crap restrictions or spyware so often found in other players. | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:18 pm | #7 | | Thankyou 0800xford Thats a good start to look at. I will get on to that link shortly. | | geek_dunedin_ree | March 14, 2008, 8:18 pm | #8 | | Two suggestions have been given so far... | | geek_0800xford | March 14, 2008, 8:19 pm | #9 | | .... are you familiar with a plugin based player? | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:21 pm | #10 | | Dunedin_ree Bit of a short suggestion description "Winamp?" & then carried on to flaming me. Yea great, thanks for being helpfull, NOT. | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:23 pm | #11 | | 0800xford Not really but shouldn't be to hard to handle. Would prefer something a little more already setup. | | geek_0800xford | March 14, 2008, 8:29 pm | #12 | | .... i've heard foobar is good and vlc? i have only seen pics of those 2 though heh media player classic rules too, not sure about a library. | | geek_0800xford | March 14, 2008, 8:33 pm | #13 | | .... how much music are you planning on putting into your library? | | geek_scottstmouse | March 14, 2008, 8:35 pm | #14 | | Normally about 2gb of assorted folders Floating around somewhere | | geek_0800xford | March 14, 2008, 8:37 pm | #15 | | .... so it's small ;) i was just going to suggest that whichever player you choose maybe see if they have a 'transferable' library so you can take it with you to try out other players... [not sure if this is 100% possible but it could be a consideration aye] =) | | geek_kickpac5 | March 14, 2008, 8:39 pm | #16 | | I see what you mean the two programs are a bit "unopen", which coincidently is how their companies made them. | | geek_dunedin_ree | March 14, 2008, 8:40 pm | #17 | | Look up "flaming". Those were questions. And if you Google Winamp, you'll find the website is the first search result you get. | | geek_pop7 | March 14, 2008, 8:46 pm | #18 | | Medis centre seems quite good | | Leave your comment: | |
