FreeView goes HD before SkyTV.

FreeView goes HD before SkyTV. I always thought Sky (skysport or sky movie etc) would be the first in NZ.

We know for a fact that TVNZ are going to show the Olympics in August in HD, and I recall reading that they will start HD in July. Sky will only say 'mid 2008' for when they go HD. Foxtel (Australian PPV) go HD next month. I didn't make any sense for SKy to go HD until after then (since we get the same channel feeds as Foxtel for a lot of channels)

Heh well its difficult to recieve analogue HD which makes it better than no HD.
geek_kylestyleMarch 15, 2008, 8:16 pm#7
Mmmmmmm looking forward to seeing Pippa Wetzell in high definition :))

I thought you'd be keen on Paul Henry ..!

Local content will be the last thing in HD. First thing is US programs like Criminal Minds, Cold Case, CSI etc. as they are shot on film and distributed as 1080i.

Re 8 the only person keen on Paul Henry, is Paul Henry!

Re 9 - well if that's the case then that's lazy pure and simple. Heck, I can buy a high definition video camera for just over a grand, if it's a case of expense, I'll storm into the Avalon / TVNZ studios myself and shoot One Network News with Simon Dallow and Wendy Petrie in their 1080p goodness. I think if TVNZ are just going to screen the stuff handed to them from overseas then it's a sham. Live television is where it should be at. I was under the understanding that the Beijing olympics were going to be the first event to be screened in NZ in high definition, much like the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games were a landmark for NZ tv as it was the first big event screened in colour. If they're just going to throw us scraps then I will be seriously p--ed off. It's time for an evolution in the way we see live (and local) television.

The news will be in HD for the beginning.

Hign definition cameras are expensive and all the equipment that goes withit. TVNZ upgrade costing $20M. to convert tape based system to hard drive. TVNZ have some high def Thompson video cameras which would have been over $100K each.

The important first step was the DVB-T H.264 system so that TVNZ even had a choice. TV3 should be first with high definition film based production material as they were with widescreen switch on April 11, feed went to Freeview on April 24. TVNZ shift was delayed to September 23 after promising July 30 and even then their new gathering cameras in most towns were still 4:3 ratio.

I'm curently watching the Sony high def samples on Kordia's digital terrestrial mux and it looks very good in 720p. TV3 upconverting 576 lines to 1080i and TVNZ upconverting to 720p currently.
